Hi, I’m Christine Okafor-Mawdsley, a Heart Health and Diabetes Weight Management Coach.
During my 30 years as a practising Pharmacist working in Community Pharmacies, I often saw patients struggling with chronic conditions that could be better managed through lifestyle changes. I had countless conversations with patients struggling with chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease—many of which could be significantly improved or even prevented with the right lifestyle changes. I dispensed medications daily, but I often saw the same patients returning, needing higher doses or additional prescriptions to manage worsening health conditions.
I became passionate about the idea that prevention and holistic health are just as important as pharmaceutical treatment. I wanted to empower people to take control of their health, not just manage symptoms and truly transform their well-being for the long term.
This realisation sparked my interest in exploring other aspects of health beyond medication. Determined to expand my knowledge and skills, I pursued education and certification in nutrition and health coaching.
My work as a Health Coach goes far beyond a professional interest. Ive also experiencred personal.
At the beginning of 2023, I had a routine blood test and was found to have high cholesterol, pre-diabetes, and chronic kidney disease.
I was shocked because I had no symptoms, so the results were completely unexpected. Perhaps you can relate?
I feared that I would be facing a slippery slope of medication and lifelong hospital visits, ultimately leading to a reduced lifespan.
Even as a healthcare professional myself, I started to worry about the long term implications and what my life was going to look like in the future with these results in my hand.
Before resorting to medication, I decided to try to change my diet, increase my exercise levels, and improve other aspects of my lifestyle to see if it made a difference.
Not only did my health improve thanks to the changes I made, but I also felt much more vibrant overall.
I felt healthier, more energised, and better than I had in years.
Fast forward to later on that year.
I returned to my doctor and my blood tests showed normal levels for diabetes, cholesterol, and kidney function. All without any medication!
My GP was amazed and to say I was happy was an understatement; This experience reinforced what I now know to be true: lifestyle changes are powerful. At 52, I felt better than ever—and I still do, two years later!
Also, for nearly all my life, since my teens, I was stuck in a relentless cycle of yo-yo dieting, losing weight, only to regain it again. I fully embraced diet culture! Trying countless fads, yet none provided lasting results. It wasn’t until the above diagnosis two years ago and I shifted my focus to sustainable lifestyle changes that everything changed. I finally broke free from the constant cycle of cravings and dieting. I successfully lost weight naturally and have maintained it ever since, simply by continuing to embrace my changed lifestyle - without any restrictions.
